1 Sergeant

Heavy Support

Dreadnaught w/TL Lascannon
I switched out my 2 Melta Gun Storm Troopers for an Inq with 2 mystics and 2 Veteran Guardsmen with Melta guns. It was 2 points more, and gave me 2 mystics and one more wound and better leadership. Then I thought that I would see a lot of Deathwing and big bugs and other hard to kill units so I added 1 more vet. Guardsmen, and 2 plasma guns, and give the Inq a combi-melta. I had to pay for it with taking off 2 Grey Knights which I was not too happy about.

Game #1 Vs. Dark Eldar

Ravager: Flicker, 3 x D.Lance

Missions objectives: Kill Points, HQ in the center of the table, Table Quarters

He had a couple of big beasthunter squads and a lot of venoms and ravagers.

Here is the start of the game:

I blew him off of the table for 4 turns (the old psycannons can take down giant beastmaster squads without working up a sweat). In the middle of turn #4 they gave the 15 minute warning, and he flew the baron to the center of the table, and a venom in my 2 table quarters that I was holding and the game was over with a 2-1 loss. If the game goes to turn #5 Stern hits the center of the table, and I win 2-1. If it goes to turn #6 he might not have anything left. The low lights for me was that he jumped out a warrior squad to kill my IG squad in the forest that was in the lower right. He killed a few guys and I failed 2 leadership checks at leadership 9 and they ran off. If they did not run, they could have killed the warrior squad back. In return I had just got on my IG command squad with the 4 flamers and I could have BBQed the beastmaster squad in the middle, but they instead had to burn the Warrior squad down.

Here is the last turn:
The cutouts are where vehicles use to be. He has 2 venoms, 1 beastmaster squad and other rabble running around. The raider on the left is without a gun and immobile. The reavers are running off of the table.

And just like that I am out.

Game #2 Vs Mech Guard
Destroy half or more of your opponent's kill points, 3 objectives, get the most units into your opponent's deployment zone.

I end up reading the mission wrong and I thought that I had to kill half of his Kill Points which is a tough match-up for me since he has about 27 KPs and I have to kill around 14 kill points to get that objective, and he has a lot of units to get into my deployment zone. I did not read the mission right, and it was pre-deployment kill points so those huge IG Platoons were worth only one KP.

Here he is moving up on the left side:

Well, at the end he kills about 7 of my KPs which is over half, and I kill 10 and that is not half of his. I win in a strait up KP game, but not this mission. He also has a hellhound from the picture above hiding behind a hill that I can’t get to, and an IG squad hidden in my deployment zone that I can’t get LOS too. I made some mistakes in this game like sacrificing my Inq to kill his demolisher.

Before sacrifice

After I drove up and tried to kill the demolisher with the Inq.

I was going to Deep Strike my Terminators into his deployment zone and go nutz, and the only thing he has that can really kill them were that demolisher. I drive up and whiff my shots, and he kills my Inq squad and their chimera. To make things worse, my terminators deviate 11” right to the corner of a chimera that was 10” away from them and the only thing that was in 12”. That is why I never deep strike: I just have terrible luck with it.

Here is the carnage after turn #5

Here is the end of the game:

I think he wins the KP mission, and the Deployment Zone mission, and he tank-shocks my GK off the objective in the center of the table with his Demolisher (I knew that thing would be a pain in my ass but I shot the heck out of it and I just could not kill it) and he holds one objective and I hold an objective for a tie on that mission. So I lose 2-0. In hindsight, I guess that I lose 2-1 since we both get the KP mission. That stupid Demolisher cost me the tie, and the horrible Deep Strike cost me the win.

Game #3 vs. Deathwing
Pitched Battle
Kill Points, 5 objectives, nominate a unit to destroy as a victory condition

My army does well against Deathwing. I start my army in reserve, and trickle on.

I come on in a corner and start blasting!

Cyclone missile launchers don’t hurt too bad, and I can put out a lot of small arms fire. In fact, my first salvo took out a CML with he had to allocate a wound to it, and he rolled a ‘1’. Hah!
Also I selected his Dreadnought as the unit that is marked for death. My IG squads sees a little bit of his shoulder and ended up killing it through some very long odds. He was not pleased.

You can see the dreadnought hiding behind the bunker in the upper right side with my IG squad lining up a shot for it:

Here are my Terminators are in the middle of his army and the Inq doing what they should have done last game, and take out the Land Raider.

Here is the end of the game. He throws his Dreadnoughts into my Terminators to keep them alive from the shooting.
He wins Objectives, and I win KP and kill his unit that was marked for death.

Yeah, I finally win!!!

Game #4 vs. Blood Angels
His List:

HQ
Meph
Libby: Blood Lance, Rage

Elite
Priest x 3: I.Pistol

Troops
Assault Marines x 8: Melta, Fist, I.Pistol, Rhino
Assault Marines x 8: Melta, Fist, I.Pistol, Rhino
Assault Marines x 8: Melta, Fist, I.Pistol, Rhino
Assault Marines x 8: Melta, Fist, I.Pistol, Rhino
Assault Marines x 8: Melta, Fist, I.Pistol, Rhino

Heavy
Devastator Squad x 5: M.Launcher x 4
Devastator Squad x 5: M.Launcher x 4

Mission: Dawn of War
Kill Points, Defend your 3 objectives, take his 3 objectives

I have had a lot of practice going up against BA, and instead of DoA army, he was a rhino rush. No problem I though since I have a lot of firepower that can take rhinos down.
Well, after making 6 out of 7 obscured rolls on his rhinos in the first turn I was in trouble.

Close up:

To make matters worse I dropped the psychic hood to save points since I have the aegis, but that did nothing to stop Mephiston. He hit my terminators and wiped them out (I just needed him to miss or fail to wound or make a save and Stearn could have ganked him with his force weapon) then he hit a GK squad and took out 5 of them, and the Justicar make all of his no-retreat saves so I could not shoot him (Grrr). Then after going through half of my army I finally got the Inq squad to take him down with plasma/melta but it was too little, too late.

So I was 1-3 with Demonhunters. I thought I could have done better but it was mostly a matter of getting matched up against the wrong armies in the wrong missions. Oh well, just bad timing. I look back on game #1 and wonder if I could have played faster, but 2 hours for 1850-2000 point games is not enough time. I did not move much, and just shot, and he had a lot of models and had to make a lot of dice rolls. Game #2 I need to read the mission correctly. If it was KP before he split his platoons up into all of those squads I would have done better since that drops his KPs way down.

Oh well, on to the Grey Knights!

  1. The "half KP" mission was actually terrible for you/extremely good for infantry blobs. IG platoons work the reverse of SM combat squads. The squads in the platoon are separate before deployment, then blobbed up into one unit at deployment. So a platoon with five squads is 6 kps prior to deployment (five squads plus junior command section), and can turn into only 2kps at deployment (command section can't join the blob; is always separate).

  2. Heavy and Special Weapon units can't join either...Frankly, it shouldn't make that huge an impact, as he should still have a large number of KPs available, and even though those ones become a LOT harder to attain, they make killing all the other things more important, too.

I'm stunned you expected two Melta shots sufficient to kill the Demolisher alone, it's not like you were shooting Rear Armour...

Your list is just missing too many elements because it was from an outdated and frankly piss poor Codex.

You could have put Flamers on the Chimeras, taken the Flamers out of the PCS, and had a second (more viable) suicide Melta unit though.

  3. As far as the meltas against the Demolisher goes, the Demolisher was the only real threat to me. It could not only take out my Terminators with one shot, but my Land Raiders as well. I did manage to take out it's gun, so my attack on it with the Inquisitor had some impact.

I thought about hull heavy flamers, but they did not have much synergy with my list. I wanted to stay back and shoot and do damage at range. I wanted my opponents to come to me and that is were the heavy bolters came in.
